During the Arab Revolt against Ottoman rule, tribal fighters under Auda abu Tayi and Sharif Nasir, with the British officer T. E. Lawrence, crossed the desert and took the port of Aqaba from the landward side. The victory let the revolt move north towards Damascus with British supply by sea. Wadi Rum, where Lawrence travelled, is still associated with the campaign.
