Beginning with the arrest of Armenian community leaders in Constantinople on 24 April 1915, the Ottoman government deported Armenians from Anatolia towards the Syrian desert, and massacres, starvation and death marches killed most of those deported, by most estimates around a million people. Turkey still rejects the term genocide. Armenians remember the victims each 24 April at Tsitsernakaberd in Yerevan.
