On a terrace above the Chan River, farmers of the Yangshao culture built a village of round and square houses inside a defensive ditch, with pottery kilns and a cemetery beyond it. Found in 1953 and excavated in the 1950s, Banpo opened in 1958 as China's first museum built over a prehistoric site, and its pots painted with fish and human faces are icons of Chinese prehistory.
