The Portuguese navigator Bartolomeu Dias sailed past Africa's southern tip in 1488, proving that the Atlantic connected to the Indian Ocean, and raised stone pillars along the coast. A decade later Vasco da Gama used the route to reach India, opening a European sea trade with Asia and beginning centuries of European involvement on Africa's coasts.
