Charles Edward Stuart's Jacobite army, largely Highland clansmen, was broken in under an hour on Drummossie Moor by the Duke of Cumberland's government troops, with some 1,500 Jacobites killed. Reprisals followed, and laws against Highland dress, weapons and the chiefs' hereditary powers dismantled the clan system. It was the last pitched battle fought in Britain and ended the Stuart cause.
