Plague reached Siena in spring 1348 and killed perhaps half its people within months; the chronicler Agnolo di Tura wrote that he buried his five children with his own hands. Work on a vast new cathedral, which would have made the existing one its transept, stalled and was abandoned in 1357. Its unfinished walls still stand as a visible monument to the pandemic.
