Early farmers settled a hillside above the Maroni river in the Neolithic and packed it with round houses of stone and mud brick behind a defensive wall. They kept sheep, goats and pigs, made vessels of carved stone before pottery reached the island, and buried their dead beneath the house floors. Several houses have been rebuilt beside the excavations to show how they were made.
