According to Georgian tradition, Saint Nino, a woman from Cappadocia, converted Queen Nana and King Mirian III of Kartli in their capital Mtskheta, making Georgia one of the first kingdoms to adopt Christianity. Svetitskhoveli Cathedral stands where the first church was built, and Jvari Monastery on the hill above marks the place of Nino's cross. Mtskheta remains the spiritual centre of the Georgian Church.
