Called by Pope Paul III in answer to the Protestant Reformation, the Council of Trent met in three periods over eighteen years in this Alpine city between the Italian and German lands. Its decrees fixed Catholic doctrine on scripture, grace and the sacraments, reformed the training of priests and led to a new catechism and missal, shaping the Catholic Church until the 1960s.
