Ephesus was one of the great ports of the Greek and Roman world, famed for its Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders. Paul preached here in the 50s AD, and the city became a centre of early Christianity. In 431 a church council at Ephesus declared Mary the Mother of God, a ruling that still shapes Christian belief.
