After a 53-day siege in which giant cannon battered the Theodosian Walls, the Ottoman army of Sultan Mehmed II stormed Constantinople, and the last Byzantine emperor died in the fighting. Mehmed made the city his capital and turned Hagia Sophia into a mosque. The fall ended the Roman Empire in the east and sent Greek scholars and manuscripts west to Italy.
