Muhammad XII, known as Boabdil, surrendered Granada, the last Muslim kingdom in Iberia, to Ferdinand and Isabella, ending nearly eight centuries of Islamic rule in Spain. Three months later, in the Alhambra, the monarchs signed a decree ordering Spain's Jews to convert or leave. Tens of thousands left, forming Sephardic communities around the Mediterranean and beyond.
