Gandhi and 78 followers walked about 385 km from Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad to the sea at Dandi, where on 6 April 1930 he picked up a handful of salt in defiance of the British salt tax. Mass civil disobedience followed across India and some 60,000 people were jailed. Reported around the world, the march became a model for later non-violent campaigns, including the American civil rights movement.
