Over about 100 days, extremist Hutu militias, soldiers and ordinary civilians killed an estimated 500,000 to more than 800,000 people, most of them Tutsi, along with Hutu who opposed them. Many were murdered in churches where they had sought shelter. The failure of the UN and world powers to intervene reshaped debates on genocide prevention. Memorials at Kigali and Nyamata preserve the evidence.
