Kotor placed itself under the Republic of Venice in 1420 and stayed Venetian, with brief interruptions, until the republic fell in 1797. Venice ringed the town and the mountainside above it with walls that climb to the fort of St John, a frontier against the Ottomans who held the hinterland and besieged Kotor in 1539 and 1657. Sea captains' palaces in Kotor and Perast date from these centuries.
