In the last weeks of the war more than a million American soldiers attacked through the Argonne forest and along the Meuse heights, the biggest battle the US Army had ever fought. Inexperienced divisions took heavy losses against deep German defences, and about 26,000 Americans were killed. The offensive was still under way when the Armistice came into force on 11 November.
