Jesus of Nazareth, a Jewish preacher from Galilee, was executed by crucifixion in Jerusalem under the Roman prefect Pontius Pilate. His followers proclaimed his resurrection, and the faith they spread became Christianity. Since the 4th century the Church of the Holy Sepulchre has marked the traditional places of his crucifixion and tomb, and several denominations share it today.
