At the imperial diet of 1530 Lutheran princes read Charles V their statement of faith, the Augsburg Confession, still the founding text of Lutheran churches. After decades of conflict, another diet in Augsburg agreed the 1555 peace that let each ruler choose the Catholic or Lutheran faith for his lands. It brought sixty years of uneasy calm, and Augsburg itself became a city of two faiths.
