Ramesses II had two temples cut into the sandstone cliffs at Abu Simbel, on Egypt's Nubian frontier: a great temple for himself and the state gods, and a smaller one for his queen Nefertari and the goddess Hathor. Reliefs inside present his wars, above all the Battle of Kadesh, and twice a year the rising sun reaches the statues in the inner sanctuary.
