Rock art of Alta

On smooth rock by the Altafjord, hunter-fisher-gatherers carved thousands of figures over about five thousand years: reindeer and elk, bears, boats, fishing scenes and dancing people. Land rising after the Ice Age lifted the shore, so the oldest carvings lie highest. Found in 1973, they form the largest group of prehistoric rock carvings in northern Europe, seen today from boardwalks at Hjemmeluft.
