Norse settlers in the Faroe Islands held their open-air assembly on Tinganes, a rocky point in what became Tórshavn, from the 9th century. There they made laws and settled disputes, and its successor, the Løgting, counts among the oldest parliaments in the world. Under Norway and then Denmark it lost power, was abolished in 1816 and restored in 1852. Turf-roofed red buildings on Tinganes still house the Faroese government.
