Joan of Arc, the peasant girl who had led French troops to relieve Orléans and seen Charles VII crowned, was captured in 1430 and handed to the English. In Rouen a church court loyal to them tried her for heresy, and on 30 May 1431 she was burned in the Old Market square, aged about 19. A retrial cleared her in 1456, and she was made a saint in 1920.
