At Hisarlık, near the mouth of the Dardanelles, the remains of at least nine cities lie on top of one another. The Late Bronze Age town, destroyed around 1180 BC, is widely linked to the war told in Homer's Iliad. Heinrich Schliemann's trench of the 1870s cut through several layers, and the site helped turn legend into a subject for scientific archaeology.
