On a bluff above the Danube just downstream from Vukovar, a Copper Age community built a hilltop settlement that gave its name to a culture spread across south-eastern Europe. Its people smelted copper and arsenic bronze and made dark pottery inlaid with white patterns; their ritual vessel in the form of a bird, the Vučedol Dove, has become a Croatian emblem. A museum set into the slope interprets the site.
