Around the Flemish town of Ypres, British Empire, French and Belgian troops held a bulge in the line against German attacks for four years. Here the German army made the first large-scale chlorine gas attack in April 1915, and in 1917 the Third Battle of Ypres ended in the mud of Passchendaele. Hundreds of thousands of soldiers died in the salient.
