Huldrych Zwingli began preaching straight through the Bible at Zurich's Grossmünster in 1519. Within six years the city council had removed images from the churches, closed the monasteries and abolished the Mass, founding the Reformed branch of Protestantism. Radicals who broke with him began adult baptism in 1525, and Zurich drowned some of them in the Limmat. Zwingli died fighting the Catholic cantons at Kappel in 1531.
