23-F: the 1981 coup attempt in Spain's parliament

Six years after Franco's death, Lieutenant Colonel Antonio Tejero and about 200 armed Civil Guards burst into the Congress of Deputies during a vote and held its members hostage overnight, while tanks rolled into Valencia. After midnight King Juan Carlos appeared on television in uniform to back the constitution, and the coup collapsed. Bullet holes are still visible in the chamber's ceiling.
