Indian independence

At midnight on 14–15 August 1947 Jawaharlal Nehru told the Constituent Assembly that India was keeping its 'tryst with destiny', and the next day the national flag was raised in Delhi. Independence ended nearly two centuries of British rule after decades of mass campaigning led by Gandhi and others, but came with the partition of the subcontinent. Prime ministers still speak from the Red Fort every 15 August.
