After Britain abolished slavery, Mauritius became the testing ground for replacing enslaved labour with indentured workers. Between 1834 and 1920 almost half a million people, most from India, landed at this immigration depot in Port Louis to work on sugar estates under contract. The system spread to the Caribbean, Fiji and South Africa, and most Mauritians descend from these labourers.
