Delegates of the Second Continental Congress, meeting in the Pennsylvania State House, voted for independence from Britain on 2 July 1776 and adopted Thomas Jefferson's Declaration two days later. Its claim that all men are created equal, with rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, was taken up by later movements worldwide, including abolitionists who pointed to its contradiction with slavery.
