German troops entered Salzburg on 12 March 1938 as Austria was annexed to Nazi Germany. On the evening of 30 April, on the Residenzplatz, the Nazi schools chief Karl Springenschmid staged a burning of 'Jewish and clerical' books, with children made to throw them into the fire. They included a work by Stefan Zweig, who had left Salzburg in 1934, and libraries seized from Catholic and pro-Austrian opponents.
