Antonine Wall

Emperor Antoninus Pius ordered a new frontier north of Hadrian's Wall, running 63 km across Scotland's narrow waist from the Forth to the Clyde. Soldiers built a turf rampart on a stone base with a deep ditch and forts along its line, recording their work on carved distance slabs. Within about twenty years the army pulled back to Hadrian's Wall.
