Five days after Lee's surrender at Appomattox, the actor John Wilkes Booth shot Abraham Lincoln during a play at Ford's Theatre. Lincoln died the next morning in a boarding house across the street. A wider plot also wounded Secretary of State William Seward. Booth was killed twelve days later and four conspirators were hanged. The killing shaped the course of Reconstruction.
