A US B-29 dropped a uranium bomb on Hiroshima at 8:15 in the morning, destroying most of the city and killing about 140,000 people by the end of 1945, many from burns and radiation sickness. It was the first use of a nuclear weapon in war. The ruined Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall, now the Atomic Bomb Dome, stands as a memorial for peace.
