Nazi Germany set up Auschwitz in occupied Poland as a concentration camp for Polish prisoners, then added the Birkenau killing centre with gas chambers. About 1.1 million people were murdered there, around a million of them Jews, along with Poles, Roma and Soviet prisoners of war. Soviet troops liberated the camp on 27 January, now International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
