The German Sixth Army fought its way into Stalingrad on the Volga, and the city was destroyed in months of street fighting. In November a Soviet counter-offensive encircled the attackers, and Field Marshal Paulus surrendered in February 1943 with about 91,000 men. The battle cost well over a million military and civilian casualties and turned the war in the east.
