After the Pakistani army's crackdown in Dhaka on the night of 25 March 1971, Bengali nationalists declared independence. Nine months of war followed, with mass killings, widespread sexual violence and some ten million refugees fleeing to India. India entered the war in December, and Pakistani forces surrendered at Dhaka's Racecourse on 16 December. Estimates of the dead range from 300,000 to three million.
