German bombers attacked Bath on two nights in reprisal for RAF raids on historic German towns, one of the so-called Baedeker raids aimed at Britain's heritage cities. 417 people were killed and more than 19,000 buildings damaged. The Assembly Rooms were burnt out and two churches lost, and the garden of Queen Square was later given to the city as a memorial.
