German paratroopers and glider troops launched the first mainly airborne invasion in history against British, Commonwealth and Greek forces on Crete, taking Maleme airfield at heavy cost. Cretan civilians fought beside the defenders. The island fell in twelve days, but German losses were so high that Hitler never again ordered a large airborne assault. Occupation and resistance lasted until 1945.
