James IV of Scotland invaded England in support of his French ally and met an English army under the Earl of Surrey at Branxton in Northumberland. English billmen cut down the Scottish pike columns as they came downhill on wet ground. James, the last monarch in Britain to die in battle, was killed with many of his nobles and clergy, leaving Scotland to an infant king.
