After Palmer's shipyard closed in 1934, most of Jarrow's workforce had no job. About 200 men set off from the town hall and walked roughly 300 miles to London with a petition of more than 11,000 signatures asking for work. Their MP, Ellen Wilkinson, presented it to Parliament, which offered nothing, but the march became Britain's enduring image of the Depression.
