The armies of Poland and Lithuania under King Władysław II Jagiełło and Grand Duke Vytautas destroyed the army of the Teutonic Knights in the fields near Grunwald, killing the order's Grand Master. The crusading order never regained its power, and in 1457 its great brick castle at Malbork passed to the Polish king. Grunwald became a national symbol in Poland and Lithuania.
