Nicolaus Copernicus, a canon of Frombork Cathedral on the Vistula Lagoon, worked out a model placing the Sun, not the Earth, at the centre of the planetary system. His book On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres appeared in 1543, the year he died. It began the scientific revolution in astronomy. His remains were identified under the cathedral floor in 2008.
