Two weeks after peace was signed at Ghent, but before the news crossed the Atlantic, a British army attacked Andrew Jackson's earthworks on the Chalmette plain below New Orleans. Jackson's mixed force of regulars, militia, free men of colour, Choctaw warriors and Baratarian privateers cut down the advancing columns in under an hour. The victory made Jackson a national figure and fed a new American confidence.
