On the Groeninge field outside Kortrijk, Flemish town militias fighting on foot with pikes defeated an army of French knights sent to punish the May rising in Bruges, when rebels had killed the French in the city. Hundreds of gilded spurs taken from the dead hung in Kortrijk's Church of Our Lady. 11 July is now the official day of the Flemish Community.
