The Ghent Altarpiece (Adoration of the Mystic Lamb)

The Van Eycks' central panel: crowds of saints and pilgrims gather around the Lamb on an altar
Archival image: Jan van Eyck and Hubert van Eyck. Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons

The brothers Hubert and Jan van Eyck painted the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb for a chapel in what is now St Bavo's Cathedral, Ghent. Its detail and glowing oil colour made it a model for European painting. Its panels were later taken to Paris, sold to Prussia, seized by the Nazis and stolen; the Just Judges panel, taken in 1934, is still missing.
