British and French armies attacked German lines on both sides of the Somme river. On the first day alone the British Army suffered more than 57,000 casualties, the heaviest one-day loss in its history. Four and a half months of fighting gained a few miles at a cost of over a million casualties on all sides, and the battle shapes how Britain and its former empire remember the war.
