Germanic warriors led by Arminius, a Cheruscan chief who had served in the Roman army, ambushed three Roman legions under Publius Quinctilius Varus on the march and destroyed them over several days. Rome never again tried to rule the lands east of the Rhine. Coins, weapons and a turf rampart found at Kalkriese since 1987 mark one of the places where the fighting happened.
