South of Brussels, Wellington's allied army held a ridge against Napoleon's attacks through the afternoon until Blücher's Prussians arrived on the French flank and the Imperial Guard was driven back. Napoleon abdicated days later and was exiled to St Helena. The battle ended more than two decades of war and opened a long period of great-power settlement in Europe.
