Franklin arrived in 1723 as a runaway printer's apprentice and built a printing business, then founded or helped found many of the city's institutions, among them a subscription library, a volunteer fire company, the academy that became the University of Pennsylvania and the Pennsylvania Hospital. His experiments with electricity made him famous in Europe, and he signed both the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.
